Meet- Kel Kemp our Nutritionist come 'Diet Dissector'

October 12, 2018

In the first of an irregular series of blogs we're going to introduce you to the team here at Myokinetics. We've asked each of these wonderful people to answer the same 10 questions on a range of diverse topics in an effort to give you an insight into how they tick.

So without further ado, can we introduce to you Kel Kemp who is our nutritional generalissimo!

Q1. Hi Kel! Nice to talk to you and thanks for your time. To start with can you tell us where you were born?

No worries! I was born third place to two older and much bigger brothers. In fact, my birth was the first, and very likely the last, best thing I ever did for my mother, at less than 6lbs my 10+lbs brothers made the job rather easy.

Oh yeah, this moment of greatness occurred in Auckland New Zealand. I am not Australian thank you very much for not asking.

Q2. What would you say is your most grandiose sporting achievement?

Stepping back on to the bodybuilding stage as a bikini competitor one year after giving birth to my daughter and taking 4th place could be up there. However I think my best moment occurred when I was about 12 years old after a family portrait session where I accidentally (on purpose) kicked my shoe off and said shoe smacked my brother clean square in the back of his head.

That in itself was a triumph of aim however, he in turn gave chase, and in the ensuing sprint I hurdled the neighbours 4 foot fence and discovered my latent knack for hurdle racing! There has to be a shoe-kicking-off competition somewhere in the world….. I could dominate that sport!

Q3. What is your favourite Sunday dinner?

I'm not a fan of the British Sunday Roast……. I am a fan of food though, lots and lots of food and I don’t wish to upset any of it by picking favourites!

Q4. You can invite three guests (anyone, dead or alive) to lunch, who is lunching with you?
My Daughter's imaginary friend Pierre (he’s a French dinosaur with a curly black moustache and he’s a right laugh), Santa and the Tooth Fairy also. I’d like to share lunch with these legends and laugh about all the advantages they have afforded me as a parent of a rapidly growing up young daughter!

Q5. How many and what injuries have you endured?
I was always referred to as “Rip Shit and Bust” as a kid, I still tend to rush, crash and burn! I have a body that seems to dislocate as opposed to breaking bones, so I have dislocated my jaw, then dislocated my left hip, left ankle and torn my left knee (in one accident). I dislocated my right ankle and have torn an intercostal muscle (by far and away the most painful of all the injuries I have had).

Most recently I had to get Paul McAvoy of Myokinetics to sort out a case of whiplash….. I walked full tit (the expression is tilt I know, but the revised version equally applies!) into a lamp post while walking the dog, head turned rubber necking a new house extension!

Q6. Your most embarrassing drinking story that you have personally experienced?
Well, I can practically count on one hand the number of times I have been drunk, I had a very short drinking career in my twenties and don’t drink anymore.

However, back then one time, when in Johannesburg for work, I was being driven to the airport for a flight home and the car I was in was targeted for an attempted carjacking. While we were all lucky to avoid serious injury as a result of the shock and nerves it appeared to be a good idea to have a stiff drink to settle down. Consequently I started drinking in the airport, boarded the flight and, having acquired the taste for it, as can happen when the drinks are free, continued drinking.

Two hours into the flight I needed the bathroom, and made my wobbling way to the rest room. I shut the door. I sat down to pee. Like a racehorse.

About 4 seconds into this experience my brain caught up to the fact that I had omitted one of the essential components of peeing sitting down- the act of pulling down one's trousers. One's light gray trousers.

By the time I had rectified the situation it was way too late and so, rather than walk through the cabin having obviously pissed myself, I washed the trousers in the sink until they a. stopped smelling of piss and b. were a nice uniform damp dark grey color. An uncomfortable experience as flights back home take eight hours. You do the math.

Q7. Favourite holiday destination?
Munich, Germany. I love a city holiday (hate beach holidays – I couldn’t think of anything worse than being sat on a beach for a week). Munich has a great environment, amazing food and drink plus I love the people!

Q8. Your most loved or supported sports team or sport?

Rugby Union and of course the All Blacks. The Haka - enough said!

Q9. You have to give up meat or dairy, which one?

I’d give up dairy, it’s a hard choice as cheese, cheese and cheese are a few of the best dairy products out there, but ribeye steak is too good not to have.

Q10. What is your Porn Star name? Take the name of your first pet and the name of the street you lived on when born = Porn Star Name

Smokey Campbell. No prizes for guessing that Smokey was a grey cat….

And finally can you tell us a little about Kel Kemp the  professional nutritionist, if you would...

I have developed my passion for nutrition into my area of expertise. I truly believe you do NOT need a new diet! You already have a diet, you just need to hone the diet you have. So, when you book a Diet and Nutrition Consultation with me, what will you get and what should you expect?

Firstly, I will ask you to fill in an online Food and Drink Diary for 7-10 days and it will need to be honest! What you eat in Private shows up in Public, so if you give me a snapshot of what you think I want to see then you will be sadly cheating yourself out of getting the advice you really need.

Next, I will give you an in-depth Client Questionnaire to complete. The more information I can obtain about you and your diet, the better your chances are to succeed with my help. Once I have gathered this information I will sit down with you and give you the specific advice regarding your diet and nutrition that has been specifically tailored to your needs, your goals and accommodates, where possible, your existing dietary preferences.

Why do I approach things this way? Because more often than not, your diet only needs small adjustments and yet the impact of those small adjustments will have a  significant impact and will create the biggest changes to your body and health, over the long term, that you are likely to see from any nutritional plan out there. These are changes that can last a lifetime because they work with your natural diet style and that my clients all equate to an almost effortless achievement of their health, fitness and weight loss or weight gain goals.
